What is EEG neurofeedback?

EEG neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive way of training the brain.  When you train with the Alevia system your brain activity is made visible on a screen (like looking at a mirror) so you can learn to change it deliberately by playing 'games' that allow you to interact with your brain in real time. By targeting EEG signals from brain areas linked to a particular problem or behaviour (for example, pain perception and regulation), you can learn to shift your brain activity toward healthier patterns linked to less pain.

Neurofeedback training uses a psychological principle called operant conditioning.  When the brain produces frequencies associated with less pain and a calm, focused state, you receive a positive reinforcement (a pleasant sound or a game moving in the right direction), which encourages your brain to repeat that pattern. With repeated sessions over weeks and months, these new patterns become more frequent, strengthening existing neural pathways and helping form new ones (neuroplasticity), which can lead to longer-term changes in how your brain responds to pain, and a return to a more optimal way of functioning.

    • Can you tell what I am thinking by looking at my EEG data?

No! We can't tell what you are thinking, but we can tell that your brain is active, and neurons are firing. All we can see is which frequencies your brain is using during your session, and how intense the brain activity is within each frequency band.
    • Is EEG neurofeedback safe?

EEG neurofeedback is widely regarded as a safe approach because it is completely non-invasive and does not deliver electricity into the brain or involve any drugs. Small sensors are simply placed on the scalp to record brainwave activity, and this ...
